National Geographic Research and Exploration Award – 1998 recipient for his research on the correlation between geology, hydrology and the Nasca Lines in Peru.

Orange County Chapter New York State Archaeological Association Order of the Trowel Award – 1998.

Orange County Chapter New York State Archaeological Association Meritorious Service Award – 2006.

Honorary Doctorate Degree – In 2010 a Diploma de Honor was awarded to Dr. David Johnson by the National University of Engineering, Lima, Peru, for his research on the correlation between the hydrology, geology, archaeology and geoglyphs of coastal Peru and Chile.

New York State Archaeological Association Meritorious Service Award – 2010 for contributing to the advancement of New York State Archaeology.

Smithsonian Institution – In 2016 the Collections Advisory Committee of the National Anthropological and Archaeological Library, Smithsonian Institution, National Archives, informed Johnson that they will serve as the repository for his research documents on Native Americans’ Ancestral Sacred Landscapes, Ceremonial Stone Landscapes and Habitationscapes.
